Buddy
App Design Case Study

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Excessive social media consumption and uncontrolled screen time are negatively affecting productivity, focus, and mental well-being—particularly among students and young adults. Constant notifications and short-form content create addictive scrolling patterns, leading to procrastination, disrupted routines, and reduced attention span. There is a need for an engaging, emotionally intelligent tool that not only tracks usage but actively supports behavior change through personalized guidance and accountability.

PROPOSAL

In an age of endless scrolling, many individuals struggle to control their phone usage and maintain focus. This app introduces a customizable virtual companion that lives inside your phone, acting as both assistant and digital pet. The character gently intervenes when screen time exceeds limits, especially during excessive social media use, and reminds users of tasks, goals, and schedules. Users can personalize their character. The app promotes healthier digital habits through motivation, affirmations, and interactive accountability, transforming productivity into an engaging and emotionally supportive experience.

TARGET PERSONA

Name: Anannya
Age: 20
Occupation: College Student (Design Major)
Anannya is a second-year college student who often struggles with procrastination. She opens social media for “just five minutes,” which quickly turns into hours of scrolling reels. As deadlines approach, she feels anxious and overwhelmed but finds it difficult to break the cycle. She wants to be productive and organized, yet traditional productivity apps feel rigid and impersonal. Anannya would benefit from a friendly, motivating digital companion that reminds her of her goals, helps her build schedules, and encourages her with affirmations—without feeling judgmental or harsh.

PROTOTYPE  MAIN FRAMES

APP CUSTOMIZABLE FEATURE FRAMES

THE DISPLAY OF THE BUDDY WHILE ON SOCIAL MEDIA APPS
The buddy is designed to appear over social media apps during extended scrolling sessions. When the user exceeds a set amount of time in one sitting, the buddy pauses the content and appears on screen. This repetitive intervention is intentional, with each appearance showing a different text prompt that encourages the user to shift focus and begin working.
